Woman checking her skin in a mirror

Pimples and dark spots usually come together: a breakout heals and leaves a dark mark behind. To get clear, even skin you need to calm the breakouts and fade the marks at the same time, and protect your skin from the sun so new marks do not form. Here is what works, using products we stock.

Step one: stop new pimples

Marks will keep coming back while you are still breaking out. Start with a cleanser that clears pores without stripping your skin:

For red, angry pimples, Anua Azelaic Acid 10 Hyaluron Redness Soothing Serum calms redness and also helps with marks.

Step two: fade the dark spots

These are the ingredients with the best track record for fading marks on deeper skin: niacinamide, tranexamic acid (TXA), alpha arbutin, azelaic acid and kojic acid. Pick one serum or cream and use it every day.

Step three: sunscreen every morning

This is the step most people skip, and it is the reason marks never fade. Sunlight darkens existing spots and creates new ones. Use a sunscreen with no white cast every morning, such as Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice. See our full guide to the best sunscreens in Kenya.

A simple routine

  • Morning: salicylic acid cleanser, dark spot serum, moisturiser, sunscreen.
  • Night: cleanser, dark spot serum or Palmer’s night cream, moisturiser.

Introduce one new product at a time, a week apart, so you know what suits your skin.

What to avoid: unlabelled “whitening” or “toning” creams sold loose or without a clear brand and ingredient list. Some contain harsh bleaching agents or steroids that can thin the skin and cause more dark patches. Painful, deep or scarring acne is a reason to see a doctor or dermatologist.

Questions we get asked

Which cream is best for pimples and dark spots in Kenya?

For oily, breakout-prone skin, Palmer’s Skin Success Fade Cream for Oily Skin is a good cream option. For faster results, pair a salicylic acid cleanser with a niacinamide and TXA serum such as Anua Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4%, and wear sunscreen daily.

How long does it take for dark spots to fade?

Most marks start to look lighter after six to eight weeks of daily use, and deeper marks can take three months or more. Without sunscreen, they may not fade at all.

Can I use niacinamide and salicylic acid together?

Yes. A salicylic acid cleanser followed by a niacinamide serum is a common, well tolerated combination.

Do these creams bleach the skin?

No. They fade dark marks back towards your natural skin tone. They do not lighten your overall complexion.

What is the best cheap option?

Start with a salicylic acid cleanser and sunscreen, then add one Palmer’s Skin Success cream. That covers the three most important steps on a smaller budget.
