Under-eye patches, eye care for dark circles

Dark circles are one of the top things people ask us about, and eye creams are some of the most oversold products in beauty. Before you spend money, it helps to know what is causing your dark circles, because an eye cream can help some types and do very little for others. Here is the honest picture, and the eye creams we recommend.

What causes dark circles

Most people have a mix. Be realistic: a good eye cream can make the area look brighter, smoother and less tired over a couple of months. It will not make dark circles disappear.

What to look for

Our picks

Best all-rounder: K-Secret Seoul 1988 Eye Cream

K-Secret Seoul 1988 Eye Cream Retinal Liposome 4% + Fermented Bean combines retinal with niacinamide and peptides, and it is made for dark circles, puffy eye bags and fine lines. It is the most complete eye cream we stock, and the one we suggest first for dark circles.

Best retinol eye cream: Some By Mi Triple Action

Some By Mi Retinol Intense Advanced Triple Action Eye Cream pairs retinol with niacinamide, centella, hyaluronic acid and panthenol. It targets dark circles, eye bags and wrinkles, and the soothing extras make it a good choice if your skin is easily irritated.

Best for dryness and fine lines: Beauty of Joseon Revive Eye Serum

Beauty of Joseon Revive Eye Serum Ginseng + Retinal is a light eye serum with ginseng and retinal. It is best for dry under eyes and fine lines rather than deep darkness, and it suits anyone who finds eye creams too heavy.

Retinal-free option: Arencia Vitamin C Booster Shot

Arencia Vitamin C Booster Shot from our eye care range brings vitamin C, glutathione, niacinamide and panthenol for dullness and uneven tone. Choose it if you would rather avoid retinal and retinol.

How to use an eye cream

  1. Use a tiny amount. About the size of a grain of rice is enough for both eyes.
  2. Pat, do not rub. Use your ring finger to tap it along the bone under the eye, staying away from the lash line.
  3. Go slowly with retinal or retinol. Use it at night only, two or three nights a week at first, then more often if your skin is happy. Stop if your eyes sting or water.
  4. Wear sunscreen every morning, right up to the under eye area. Sun makes pigment darker and undoes the work of your eye cream.
  5. Be patient. Judge it after at least two months of steady use.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before using any retinal or retinol product, including eye creams. And try not to rub your eyes. Rubbing from dust, allergies or tiredness is one of the biggest causes of darker under eyes on deeper skin. If your eyes itch often, a pharmacist can help.

Questions we get asked

Can eye cream really remove dark circles?

Not completely. An eye cream can help dark circles caused by pigment and dryness look lighter and smoother over a couple of months, especially with daily sunscreen. It cannot change dark circles caused by genes, the shape of your face or blood vessels showing through thin skin.

Which eye cream is best for dark circles in Kenya?

Our first pick is the K-Secret Seoul 1988 Eye Cream, which is made for dark circles, eye bags and fine lines. If you would rather avoid retinal, try the Arencia Vitamin C Booster Shot.

What is the K-Secret Seoul 1988 eye cream good for?

It combines retinal with niacinamide, peptides and fermented bean, and it is made for dark circles, puffy eye bags and fine lines. Start with two or three nights a week and wear sunscreen in the day.

At what age should I start using eye cream?

There is no fixed age. Many people start in their mid twenties, when fine lines or dark circles begin to bother them. Before that, a good moisturiser and sunscreen around the eyes is usually enough.

How much is eye cream in Kenya?

The eye creams in this guide cost roughly KSh 2,400 to KSh 2,700 for 30ml, which lasts a long time because you only need a tiny amount. The live prices are in the list above.
