Batana oil has become one of the most searched hair oils in Kenya. Here is what it is, what it can and cannot do, how to use it properly, and where to buy it in Nairobi.
Batana oil comes from the nut of the American oil palm, and it has been used for hair care for generations in Central America, especially Honduras. It is thick, rich in fatty acids and antioxidants, and usually dark brown with a nutty smell.
The batana oil we stock is Amalico Batana Oil PRO 250ml, a rich batana oil for hair and dry skin.

To be honest about it: there is very little scientific research on batana oil and new hair growth. What it does well is protect the hair you already have. Less breakage plus a healthy scalp is often what people mean when they say an oil helped their hair grow.
Warm a small amount between your palms, work it through your hair from root to tip, and leave it on for 30 minutes to a few hours, or overnight under a satin bonnet. Then shampoo and condition as usual. Once a week is enough.
Use a few drops only, part your hair and massage gently with your fingertips for two to three minutes, two or three times a week. Too much oil on the scalp can feel heavy and attract dirt.
After your leave-in conditioner, smooth a tiny amount over the last few centimetres of your hair to lock in moisture and reduce split ends.
A small amount softens dry elbows, knees and heels. Patch test first if your skin is sensitive.
Batana oil is thick and can become firm when the weather is cool. Warm the closed jar in a cup of warm water, or between your hands, before use.
They do different jobs. Batana oil is heavy and conditioning, best for dry, brittle hair and ends. Mielle Rosemary Mint Scalp and Hair Oil is light and made for the scalp. Many people use rosemary oil on the scalp during the week and batana oil as a weekly pre-wash treatment. See our guide to the best hair growth oils in Kenya to compare them all.

How much is batana oil in Kenya?
Our Amalico Batana Oil PRO 250ml is listed above with today’s live price. A 250ml tub lasts several months because you only need a small amount each time.
Does batana oil really make hair grow?
There is little scientific evidence that it makes new hair grow. It does soften hair and help reduce breakage, so you keep more of your length, which is why many people see longer hair over a few months.
How often should I use batana oil?
Once a week as a pre-wash treatment, or a few drops on the scalp two or three times a week. More is not better, because heavy oil build-up can weigh hair down.
Can I use batana oil on relaxed hair or locs?
Yes. On relaxed hair, focus on the lengths and ends. On locs, use a very small amount on the scalp and wash it out well so it does not build up inside the locs.
Is batana oil good for the face?
It is very rich, so we do not recommend it for oily or acne-prone faces. It is better for dry body skin such as elbows, knees and heels.
