Every week someone asks us which oil will make their hair grow. The honest answer is that healthy hair grows on its own; the right oil helps by keeping your scalp comfortable and stopping your ends from breaking off. Here are the oils that do that best, and how to choose.
First, how hair “growth” really works
Hair grows about one centimetre a month for most people. If your hair never seems to get longer, it is usually breaking at the ends as fast as it grows at the root. So the two jobs of a hair oil are to keep the scalp healthy and to protect the length you already have.
The oils we recommend
For the scalp: Mielle Rosemary Mint Oil
Mielle Rosemary Mint Scalp and Hair Strengthening Oil is light, with rosemary, mint and biotin. It is made for regular scalp massage and does not feel heavy. Rosemary oil is the most popular hair oil right now, and a short scalp massage two or three times a week is an easy habit to keep. Read more in our guide to Mielle rosemary oil in Kenya.
For dry, brittle hair: batana oil
Amalico Batana Oil PRO is thick and conditioning. Use it as a weekly pre-wash treatment to soften hair and reduce breakage. See batana oil in Kenya for how to use it.
For edges and thinning spots: Jamaican black castor oil
Jamaican Mango and Lime Black Castor Oil Xtra Dark and the version with vitamins A, D and E are classics for edges, the hairline and the ends. Castor oil is very thick, so mix a few drops with a lighter oil if you find it heavy.
Budget everyday pick: Blue Magic Indian Hemp
Blue Magic Organics Indian Hemp is an affordable hair dress for scalp and edges, good for daily moisture on natural and relaxed hair.
For a dry, itchy scalp: Creme of Nature Argan Oil Day and Night
Creme of Nature Argan Oil Day and Night Hair and Scalp conditions the scalp and hair and helps with dryness.

How to use a hair oil properly
- Scalp: part the hair, apply a few drops directly to the scalp, and massage with your fingertips for two to three minutes. Two or three times a week.
- Lengths: apply oil after a water-based leave-in conditioner, never on completely dry hair. Oil seals in moisture; it does not add it.
- Pre-wash: heavier oils like batana and castor work well for an hour or overnight before washing.
- Be patient: give any routine at least three months before judging it.
Sudden shedding, patches of hair loss, or a painful, flaky scalp are reasons to see a doctor or dermatologist. Oils help healthy hair stay healthy; they do not treat medical hair loss.

Questions we get asked
Which is the best oil for hair growth in Kenya?
For a scalp routine, Mielle Rosemary Mint Oil is our most popular choice. For dry hair that breaks, batana oil or Jamaican black castor oil work better on the lengths. Many people combine a light scalp oil with a heavier oil for the ends.
How long does a hair growth oil take to work?
Give it at least three months of regular use. Hair grows slowly, and the first thing you usually notice is less breakage and a calmer scalp.
Can I mix rosemary oil and castor oil?
Yes. Mixing a few drops of castor oil into a lighter oil makes it easier to spread on the scalp.
Should I put oil on my hair every day?
No. A few times a week is enough for most hair. Too much oil builds up on the scalp and weighs hair down.
Do hair oils work on relaxed hair?
Yes. Focus scalp oils on the scalp and lighter oils on the lengths, and avoid heavy oils right before a relaxer touch-up.
