Natural hair in Nairobi has a lot to deal with. There is dust from the roads, hard water in many estates, and long dry spells. The right shampoo lifts all of that off your scalp without leaving your hair rough and tangled, and the right conditioner puts the softness back. Here are the shampoos we stock, what to pair each one with, and how to choose.
What to look for
- Gentle cleansing. Coily hair is drier than straight hair, because the oil from your scalp struggles to travel down a tight curl. A creamy or sulfate-free shampoo cleans without leaving hair squeaky, hard and difficult to detangle.
- Scalp first. Dust, sweat and product build-up sit on the scalp, not on the ends. Choose a shampoo you are happy to massage into the scalp, and let the lather rinse down through the lengths.
- A conditioner to match. Shampoo starts the job and conditioner finishes it. On natural hair, never skip conditioner after shampoo, or detangling turns into a fight.
- Hard water. If your taps and kettle get white marks, your water is hard. Hard water can leave hair feeling coated and dull. Rinse for longer, and if you keep filtered or clean stored water, use it for the final rinse.
Our picks
Best for most natural hair: Cantu Cleansing Cream Shampoo
Cantu Shea Butter Sulfate-Free Cleansing Cream Shampoo is sulfate-free and creamy, made with shea butter for dry, curly and natural hair. It cleans the scalp without that stripped feeling, and the 400ml bottle lasts a good while. Its natural partner is the Cantu Hydrating Cream Conditioner. Our guide to Cantu products covers the rest of the range.
Best for scalp care and breakage: Mielle Rosemary Mint Shampoo
Mielle Rosemary Mint Strengthening Shampoo is made for hair that breaks and for scalp care, with rosemary and mint. It makes sense if you already massage rosemary oil into your scalp, because the two sit well in one routine. It is a scalp shampoo first, so always follow it with a rich conditioner or masque on the lengths. Read more in our Mielle rosemary oil guide.
Gentlest option, and for children: Johnson’s Baby Shampoo
Johnson’s Baby Shampoo is the familiar No More Tears formula. It is a mild wash for children’s natural hair, and for adults with a tender scalp. It is not made with coily hair in mind, so follow it with a conditioner and a leave-in every time.
Deep conditioner for dry hair: Cantu Deep Treatment Masque
Cantu Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque is a rich shea butter treatment for dry, damaged hair that breaks. Use it in place of your normal conditioner once a week, or on every wash day if your hair is very dry. It pairs well with any of the shampoos above.
Leave-in to finish: African Pride and Creme of Nature
After you rinse out the conditioner, natural hair needs a leave-in to hold on to moisture. African Pride Olive Miracle Leave-In Conditioner comes in a big tub for dry, curly hair. If knots are your main problem, Creme of Nature Pure Honey Leave-In Detangler is made for exactly that.

A simple washing routine for Nairobi
Most natural hair does well with a shampoo every one to two weeks. If you work outdoors, ride matatus every day or live on a dusty road, once a week keeps your scalp comfortable.
- Section first. Wash in four to six twists or plaits so the hair does not tangle.
- Shampoo the scalp only. Massage with your fingertips, not your nails. The lather that runs down is enough for the ends.
- Rinse with lukewarm water, and rinse longer than feels necessary if your water is hard.
- Condition every time, then a leave-in on damp hair.
- Protect between washes. Cover your hair on very dusty days and sleep on satin.
For the full step-by-step with detangling and styling, see our wash-day routine for natural hair in Nairobi.
If you wear gel, edge control or heavy oils during the week, one wash may not lift it all. Shampoo twice on those days: the first wash loosens the build-up, the second actually cleans the scalp. Our hair gel guide has tips to stop gel flaking in the first place.

Questions we get asked
Which shampoo is best for natural hair in Kenya?
For most natural hair, the Cantu Shea Butter Sulfate-Free Cleansing Cream Shampoo is the easiest place to start. If breakage and scalp care are your main worry, the Mielle Rosemary Mint Strengthening Shampoo is a good choice. Whatever you pick, follow it with a conditioner and a leave-in.
Is sulfate-free shampoo better for natural hair?
For most natural hair, yes. A sulfate-free shampoo cleans without leaving coily hair as dry and squeaky, which makes detangling easier. If you have heavy build-up, wash twice rather than switching to a harsh shampoo.
How often should I wash natural hair in Nairobi?
Every one to two weeks suits most people. With a lot of dust, sweat or styling products, once a week is better. Washing every day usually dries natural hair out.
Can I use baby shampoo on natural hair?
Yes, it is a mild option, especially for children or a sensitive scalp. It is not as moisturising as a natural hair shampoo, so always follow it with a conditioner and a leave-in.
Do I need conditioner after every shampoo?
Yes. Shampoo lifts dirt but also some of the hair’s moisture. A conditioner or masque softens the hair again and makes detangling much gentler, which means less breakage.
