CeraVe is one of the most asked-for names on our shelves, and one of the most misunderstood. It is not a miracle and it is not a scam. It is a competent, boring, dermatologist-adjacent range that does one specific thing well — and whether that thing is what you need is the whole question.
What CeraVe actually is
The range is built around two ideas: ceramides, which are lipids your skin already makes and which hold the outer barrier together, and a slow-release delivery system that keeps them working after application. Almost every product in the line is some version of “clean or moisturise without disturbing the barrier”.
That is a narrow promise, and CeraVe keeps it. What it does not do is treat. There is no serious brightening in the range, no strong anti-ageing story, no dramatic before-and-after. If you are buying it hoping to fade dark spots, you have bought the wrong thing — it is the moisturiser step in a routine whose treatment step is something else.
Who it genuinely suits
- Dry, tight, flaky skin — especially if soap-based cleansers have been making it worse.
- Skin that has been over-treated — too many acids, too much retinol, a lightening cream that went wrong. CeraVe is what people use to calm down.
- Sensitive or eczema-prone skin — fragrance-free across the range, which removes the most common irritant.
- Anyone starting out — it is hard to go wrong with it, which is worth a lot when you are new.
Who should probably buy something else
- Very oily, congested skin may find the richer moisturisers heavy. The SA cleanser is the piece of the range that suits you; the creams may not.
- Anyone whose main goal is pigmentation, texture or fine lines. Buy the treatment first and worry about the moisturiser second.
- Anyone on a tight budget who already has a moisturiser that works. CeraVe is not cheap here. If your barrier is fine, you are paying for a problem you do not have.
The three we stock, and what each is for
Hydrating Cleanser
The default. A non-foaming, milky cleanser for normal-to-dry skin that leaves skin feeling comfortable rather than squeaky. If your face feels tight after washing, this is the fix.
Foaming Cleanser
Same philosophy, more cleansing power, for normal-to-oily skin. It foams without the stripped feeling you get from a soap bar.
SA Smoothing Cleanser
Contains salicylic acid. Genuinely useful for rough, bumpy texture — the backs of arms, congested foreheads, keratosis pilaris. It is the one product in the range that does something beyond maintenance.

Is it worth the Kenyan price?
This is the real question, and the honest answer depends on what you are comparing it to.
Against a supermarket soap bar or a stripping foaming wash: yes, comfortably. You will feel the difference within a week and the bottle lasts three to four months.
Against an equivalent Korean cleanser at a similar price: it is a genuine toss-up. Something like a low-pH centella foam does the same barrier-friendly job, often in a more pleasant texture, sometimes for less. CeraVe’s advantage is consistency — you know exactly what you are getting, every bottle, and it has the clinical backing that most of the alternatives do not.
Against a cheap local moisturiser that already works for you: probably not. Skincare has a strong pull towards buying the famous thing. If your barrier is healthy and your skin is calm, CeraVe will not give you anything you do not already have.
On counterfeits. CeraVe is one of the most faked skincare brands in the region, because it is popular, recognisable and sold at a price point that leaves room for a convincing knock-off. Check that the pump works smoothly, the text is sharp and correctly spelled, and the batch code on the bottle matches the box. If the price is far below everyone else’s, that is the reason.
How to use it without wasting it
- Cleanse once in the morning, twice at night if you wear sunscreen or make-up — an oil or balm first, then the CeraVe.
- Moisturiser goes on damp skin, within a minute of washing. On bone-dry skin you are sealing in nothing.
- Sunscreen over the top, every morning. A healthy barrier and an unprotected face is half a routine.
