A routine for dry skin
- Cleanse with a cream or milky wash, not a foaming one. CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser is the classic.
- Add water-based hydration on damp skin: a hydrating toner or essence, like I'm From Rice Toner or COSRX Snail 96 Essence.
- Seal it in with a cream made with ceramides, panthenol or hyaluronic acid. For very dry or damaged skin, Purito Panthenol Cream or La Roche-Posay Cicaplast B5+.
- Sunscreen in the morning. Sun damage weakens the barrier.
Dry or dehydrated?
Dry skin makes too little oil and feels rough all the time. Dehydrated skin lacks water and can still be oily, with a tight feeling after washing. Both need hydration; dry skin also needs a richer cream.
Habits that help
- Wash with lukewarm water, not hot.
- Apply moisturiser within a minute of washing, while the skin is still damp.
- Cut back on scrubs and acids until your skin feels comfortable again.

Questions we get asked
Which moisturiser is best for very dry skin?
Look for ceramides, panthenol or shea. Dr. Althea 147 Barrier Cream and Cicaplast B5+ are the richest here; COSRX Hyaluronic Acid Intensive Cream is a lighter option.
Why is my skin flaky even though I moisturise?
Often the cleanser is too harsh or you are over-exfoliating. Switch to a hydrating cleanser for two weeks before adding anything new.
Do I need a different routine for my body?
Body skin dries out the same way. See our body lotions and body oils.
